Graphite Tips and Tricks

Graphite is one of the most standard and accessible tools for drawing. Many different style can be achieved with graphite, and all different skill levels can create successful pieces with it with a little practice. From doodles to realism, graphite can be used to create whatever it is you have in mind.

Shading and Building Up Values
One of the things that makes graphite such a desired medium is that it is erasable. However don’t fall into the trap of thinking that all graphite can be erased without a trace. After a certain point the graphite will leave behind a visible mark on the paper. This usually happens when you push hard on the graphite to get darker shades. That is why I advise to always start out light with graphite. It is inevitable that you will want to make some initial changes to your drawing and this will be very easy to do if you start out with a light drawing. I also apply this strategy to shading. Start out light and build up to darker values. This will help you achieve a more realistic blend of tones.

Blending
Also with graphite you have the ability to blend using a variety of methods. The first method is finger blending. This works well for large areas of graphite that you want to blend, but it is hard to blend detailed areas with your finger. You can also use toilet paper or tissues if you want to keep you hands clean. May favorite method for blending is using paper blending sticks. You can find them at any craft or art store near the pencil section and they come in a variety of sizes. You could also roll your own blending sticks but I find it easier to just buy the pre-made ones. These blending sticks allow you to blend in the large areas and the small details without getting your hands too dirty.

Erasers
There are a variety of erasers you can invest in as well that can help you bring out highlights and details in your drawings. These are helpful because it is extremely likely that an area you intend to leave white will get some sort of graphite on it throughout the drawing process. You can go back in with a small eraser and clean up those areas to create a further sense of three dimensionality. One of my favorite erasers for graphite drawing is actually an electric eraser. I bought mine at Aaron Brothers but I have seen them at a variety of other craft stores and online. These motor powered erasers work extremely well for creating highlights in hair and creating texture in a somewhat quick fashion.
